Issue No. 26: Minchew's Monody In Memoriam Charles Wuorinen

In November 2020, I was part of a consortium that commissioned composer Everette Minchew for a new work for solo instrument. This past weekend, I had the privilege of broadcasting the world premiere recording of the resulting piece, Monody In Memoriam Charles Wuorinen, at the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 6 Conference.

Now everybody can hear it!

About the piece, the composer writes:

The works of Charles Wuorinen hold a special place in my development as a young composer. His book, Simple Composition, became my constant companion for quite a while when I first began composing. I found its exercises endlessly inspiring, and I still use some of the techniques twenty years later. So when Charles Wuorinen passed away in early 2020, all the memories of flipping through his book came rushing back. [My] Monody is mildly inspired by his work Variations for flute.
