Program Note:  Commissioned by and dedicated to the Asheville Community Band and its director Michael Robinson, Noir Fantasy was premiered at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on November 10, 2013. Noir Fantasy is a full-blooded rhapsodic homage to classic film noir/crime thrillers and their imaginative scores, movies such as Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest and Vertigo (scored by the great composer Bernard Herrmann), Carol Reed's The Third Man (made unforgettable by Anton Karas' zither music), Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity (score by Miklós Rósza), and so on. The musical soundtracks for these films have long fascinated the composer with their peculiar mixtures of German late Romanticism, jazz, and 20th-century harmony. After initial performances by the Asheville Community Band, Noir Fantasy has been subsequently performed by the Mars Hill University Wind Symphony, Manhattan Wind Ensemble, Piedmont Wind Symphony, Jacksonville University Wind Ensemble, Twickenham Winds (Huntsville, AL), Atlanta Concert Band, and others.
