Variations on a Theme of Gretchaninov (2001, revised 2005)

Instrumentation: Two alto (or baritone) saxophones

Duration: 9'

Dedication: Marc Ballard and David Parks

Movements: One movement

Program Note:  Variations on a Theme of Gretchaninov was premiered in the autumn of 2001 by the composer and Craig Lundgren. The composition is not a typical set of variations wherein each section varies the original theme; rather, variations modify the section that immediately preceded. (Example: Variation III is not a variation of Gretchaninov's melody but a variation of Variation II.) The work fluctuates between late Romantic gestures/harmony and rhythmically complex, freely atonal counterpoint. This is an ideal recital piece for collegiate undergrads on up and works well on any two like saxophones pitched in E-flat.
