Ars Lucis/Umbrae (2008)

Instrumentation: Piano solo

Duration2'

Dedication: Lynn Raley

Movements: One movement

Program Note: The title of the composition is taken from a chapter heading (“The Great Art of Light and Shadow”) in Umberto Eco’s novel The Island of the Day Before, which tells of the adventures of a 17th-century Italian nobleman. Eco’s chapter title, in turn, is a reference to Athanasius Kircher’s 1645–1646 work Ars Magna Lucis et umbrae in mundo.  Ars Lucis/Umbrae is dedicated to Lynn Raley who premiered the work.
